Where do I start with this? The controversy around Verka was huge. A drag act representing the largely homophobic Slavic culture caused an uproar from it's native country. Then there was the whole strange thing that the lyric "Lasha Tumbai" sounded an awful lot like "Russia Goodbye." Even though the song had lyrics in Russian, it seemed like a criticism of Russia surrounding their policies on their sister nation. Despite all that, the legend of Verka was finally spread to the rest of Europe that night in Helsinki.

Verka was already a huge star in Russia and Ukraine. Her in your face attitude combined with ridiculous pop songs and even crazier outfits has meant enduring success for the performer. You may even recognize her and this song from her rather major appearance in the 2015 film "Spy." The 2007 contest launched a true pan-European star.
