2008: The Best
SÉBASTIEN TELLIER WITH "DIVINE" FOR FRANCE

This synthpop song received enough criticism to be brought up in the French Parliament with calls for it's withdrawal from the contest. Why? It was the first French entry to be sung mostly in English! To top things off, the French superstar Sébastien Tellier arrived on the Eurovision stage riding a golf cart holding a beach ball globe. His female backing singers wore suits and fake beards to look like the lead singer. The performance was humorous but in an intentional way for once.
Produced by Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, one half of the French House band Daft Bank, Divine was a complete ray of sunshine in the eclectic bag of songs in 2008. I was already familiar with the singer due to his popularity throughout Europe. He brought a needed injection of alternative pop to the contest. Though the performance wasn't perfect, I think it deserved to do better that night. The Eurovision audience wasn't quite ready for him yet.
Final Score: 47 pts (19th place out of 25)
