2003: The Honorable

Ok, I'm a little biased here and the whole reason I ever watched Eurovision was because of these two feisty ladies. The song, entitled "Don't Trust, Don't Fear, Don't Believe," is based on Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's book "The Gulag Archipelago." A series of metaphors about the old gulag code Soviet prisoner's followed playing under a series of electro-pop goodness, the song was created sending MP3s between the USA and Russia. But mired by controversy, fears the girls would perform indecent acts on stage, the girls failed to win by only 2 freaking points!
The UK and Ireland were the only countries that didn't give any points to the duo prompting cries of foul play from Russia. The girls song "All The Things She Said" was currently in the top 10 in the countries at the time. The girls had a shaky performance but for good reason. Julia had caught a case of laryngitis days before the show. She couldn't perform in rehearsals. None of this is made-up, there's a whole documentary about it! I don't think the girls were necessarily robbed though. The winner and second place songs were also of high quality. To this day, however, I owe t.A.T.u. and "Ne Ver, Ne Boisya" for introducing me to Eurovision. I've even had the chance to thank them personally too!
